MORVAH CRICKET CLUB

I have extracts from the score book of a match between Morvah and St Just dated 29 May 1925. Morvah batted first and were all out for 38, top scorer was Charlie May with 15 runs. St Just batted and were all out for 12 runs. 6 wickets taken by W Noye
and 4 by Charlie May.

After the 39/45 World War Morvah cricket club was started up, the sponsor was farmer Mr Ellis who supplied the field, pavilion and top floor of his adjacent barn for the wonderful cream teas, which were provided by Mrs Ellis, her daughters and supporting wives of the cricket team. The club closed in about 1959.
The team played in the Junior County league with such worthy opponents over the years such as St Buryan, Nancledra, Madron, St Ives, Rosudgeon-Kenneggy, Gulval & Sennen in this league.

The Captain was C (Charlie) W May who started his cricket at Trewellard CC in about 1920 before moving to Penzance in the 1930’s. A miner who with other miners including Joe Wall, Tom Strick, Regie Taskes, Len Harvey, Tommy Taskes had all played together as far back as1920. Members of Morvah’s farming community were important team members including William (Willie) Mann, (treasurer and records), Arthur Mann, Stanley Hicks, his nephew A Hicks, Martin Hoskin, W. Oats, Kenny May and John Everett Ladner (wicket keeper), A Ladner and others over the period who’s names are lost including some from their Naval base at Culdrose, introduced by the wicket keeper. Umpire was Mr Tonkin and scorer Russell May (capt’s son) who made up numbers when the side were short.

THE TROPHY

Charlie May was rarely missing from the Cornishman’s weekly Honours list of 5’s & 50’s. In 1958 in a Vinter cup final against Madron He took all 10 wickets for 6 runs and was presented with a trophy with the match ball mounted on top of three silver stumps. This was the fourth time for all ten wickets the other’s being:-
1948 against St Buryan 10 for 18, 1950 against St Buryan 10 for 28, 1952 against Madron 10 for 10.

While playing for Penzance Charlie took 9 wickets and caught the tenth in the slips and in the Vinter cup final Penzance against Mullion 3.8.1939 he took 5 wickets in 9 balls allowing Penzance to be presented with the Cup.

The Annual autumn supper was a Grand event for Morvah Cricket Club which included the Seasons achievements and would be held in the Morvah Church school room.

This event photograph taken in 1953, was provided by Mrs Jenny Mann with Mrs Ellis is standing next to Charlie May who is holding the cup. The extent of the feast is on the table.

Full details of match results are available in the Weekly addition of the Cornishman.
